General Dentistry

The first area of dental treatment is general dentistry. This area of dentistry is focused on ensuring that you have good oral hygiene and dental health, that you do not have any issues such as cavities, caries or gum disease. General dentists also use restorative dentistry procedures to repair the effects of tooth decay, trauma, defect or disease in these areas of the mouth.
Regular checkups and oral health maintenance prevent the development of serious dental problems that can require costly treatment.

Root canal treatment (also known as endodontic treatment) is necessary when the inside of the tooth and surrounding area becomes infected as a result of wear, decay or injury. Symptoms of infection include:

  • Sensitivity to hot or cold food or drinks
  • Pain when biting or chewing
  • Swelling of the gum near the affected tooth
  • Oozing from the affected tooth
  • Facial swelling

The aim of root canal treatment is to save the tooth and prevent it from future infection. If ignored, the infection could spread and the tooth may need to be extracted. During treatment your Smiles dentist will:

  • Remove infected or damaged tissue inside the tooth
  • Clean and disinfect the area
  • Fill and seal the space using advanced materials

Depending on the strength of the remaining structure post treatment, the tooth may require either a filling or a crown.
